Project Strategy

The flooring installation within the Surrey Memorial Hospital Cardiac Catheterization Labs represents a highly specialized and unique healthcare installation, defined by precision, material performance, and execution within one of the hospital’s most technically demanding environments.
Cath labs require flooring systems that support strict infection-control protocols, integrate seamlessly with fixed medical equipment, and perform reliably under continuous clinical use.

The project utilized healthcare-grade homogeneous sheet vinyl flooring, installed with heat-welded seams and integrated cove base to create a seamless, cleanable surface, critical for sterile environments.
These materials were selected for their durability, chemical resistance, and ability to maintain performance under heavy equipment loads and frequent cleaning cycles. Installation required meticulous substrate preparation and precise layout coordination to accommodate lead-lined walls, embedded services, imaging equipment, and tight room tolerances.

What makes this installation unique (and see below) is not only the materials themselves, but the level of craftsmanship required to install them flawlessly in confined, high-stakes spaces with zero tolerance for error. Seam placement, detailing, and transitions were executed with absolute accuracy, recognizing that the flooring functions as an extension of the clinical environment. This project demonstrates how specialized materials, when expertly installed, support the safety, efficiency, and reliability of life-saving healthcare spaces.

Unique Installation Challenge Strategy

Installer Perspective: Flooring in Active Cath Labs

"Tight timelines, crazy conditions, and a Live emergency hospital environment right on the other side of a door or barrier"...

One of the defining challenges of installing flooring in the Surrey Memorial Hospital Cath Labs was the need to achieve absolute precision around fixed, immovable medical infrastructure. Unlike typical clinical spaces, cath labs contain permanently mounted imaging equipment, shielded walls, and embedded services that cannot be adjusted to accommodate flooring tolerances. This required the flooring installation to be planned in reverse. Starting from the equipment footprint outward, rather than from walls or room centers.

To address this, the installation team implemented a pre-layout verification process, dry-fitting and mapping seam placement and material cuts prior to adhesive application. This ensured heat-welded seams were positioned away from high-stress zones and critical equipment interfaces. Substrate preparation was executed in controlled phases, allowing for corrective levelling where legacy conditions conflicted with modern flatness requirements.

Sequencing was equally critical. Flooring work was coordinated to align with imaging equipment installation windows, requiring flexible crew scheduling and non-linear installation phases. Integrated cove base and welded seams were completed with heightened attention to edge integrity, recognizing that these details directly support infection control and long-term performance.

This strategy transformed the extreme spatial and technical constraints into a successful installation. One that can meet the uncompromising demands of a high-acuity clinical environment.
