Project Strategy
Northbrook Mall, also known as Northbrook Professional Center, was Bismarck's first fully enclosed shopping center and second in the state of North Dakota. Northbrook Mall opened in 1963, and renovations were last completed in the late 1980s. Over the years, it has evolved into a mixed-use facility with over forty commercial tenants, ranging from restaurants, clinics, retail stores, and professional services.
This flooring project was completed for a multi-use commercial facility serving a wide range of professional tenants and experiencing consistent, high-volume foot traffic. A key design challenge was developing a cohesive flooring solution that balanced durability, aesthetics, and acoustic performance while clearly defining circulation paths, entry zones, and shared gathering areas. J&J Elemental carpet tile in the colors Raw and Pipes, paired with J&J Catwalk carpet tile in Spotlight, was strategically selected and installed to create visual rhythm, guide movement through long corridors, and minimize visible wear in primary traffic lanes. These materials also played a critical role in improving acoustics, helping to control noise levels in an open, shared environment.
Equally important were the scheduling and flexibility requirements of the project. Installation was carefully phased to ensure the building remained open and fully accessible to tenants throughout construction, requiring precise coordination and adaptable sequencing. Moonrock cove base and transitions by Tarkett were incorporated to provide clean detailing, durability, and smooth transitions between spaces. The completed design successfully integrates performance-driven acoustics, efficient traffic flow, and a neutral, professional aesthetic, resulting in a functional and welcoming environment that supports the diverse needs of a multi-use facility.
