Project Strategy

Overall Strategy

The Tinley Park Public Library 2nd Floor interior renovation design used a complex series of curves, color and intersecting geometries for the flooring to unify a variety of Children’s and Teen program areas within an open floor space. While each area maintains its own identity, the result is a striking yet cohesive composition that completes the intended vision for both the architect and library.

Six overall carpet colorwere utilized, each with two coordinated styles of color interwoven to create blended color fields and continuous movement across the space. The strategy emphasized precise execution and collaboration to translate complex design intent into a durable, high-performing installation. Close coordination with the Starnet vendor partners, architect, and construction manager ensured pattern integrity, material transitions, and design continuity across the entire second floor. The finished space demonstrates how flooring can function as both a technical solution and a defining design feature in a public library environment.

Outcome / Result

Despite the complexity of the patterns and geometry along with a four-phase, non-adjacent installation within an occupied building, the project was delivered on schedule and without significant changes to the contract. The finished project demonstrates how thoughtful collaboration, technical expertise, and precise execution can be used to incorporate new flooring as a key feature of public renovation projects.

The architect on this project who we have worked with in the past strives to create unique design solutions for each library. Our team was able to rise to the challenge and deliver an exceptional product for both library staff and patrons to enjoy for years to come.

Unique Installation Challenge Strategy

The project was executed across four non-adjacent phases within an occupied library, requiring careful sequencing and coordination while maintaining design continuity. The carpet installation incorporated six overall colors and twelve distinct styles. Vendor partner, Milliken, provided an overall project rendering for the project in addition to architectural drawings. All color pattern transition arcs were transcribed and freehand cut by the installation team.

Additional complexity included varied subfloor conditions addressed through self-leveling, custom ramping at floor-to-ceiling glazed window / systems, and reinforcement over existing metal ductwork to prevent movement-related cracking. In addition to the carpeted area, three separate restrooms incorporated twelve different ceramic tile products, each with unique layouts, sizes, grout color and design intent. Extensive field verification and real-time adjustments by the installation team were required to fully realize the architect’s vision while ensuring long-term performance.
