Project Strategy

The project is credited to Little Diversified Architectural Consulting and SSOE, who worked together as collaborative design partners on the new Saluda Elementary School project in Saluda, SC. The joint partnership design approach shared in delivering the prototype‑based school design inclusive of full site work and new construction of an educational facility in Saluda County, SC. The project was executed in phases, with phase one covering over 90% of the new structure.

Saluda Elementary School originated within the state’s prototype program, yet the design team approached it as an opportunity to elevate both function and identity. The flooring concept was developed as a flexible, future‑ready system—one that could adapt to evolving district needs while creating a strong sense of place for young learners. Each academic wing is anchored by its own signature color, serving as intuitive wayfinding and grade‑level identity. These colors were intentionally selected so they could be easily reconfigured or replaced to reflect a district’s branding or long‑term vision without altering the architectural framework.

This chromatic language reappears along the school’s central “main street,” symbolizing a shared community spine where all students come together. The continuity of color reinforces belonging and creates a cohesive visual narrative throughout the building.

One of the key components of flooring finish material selections was the integration of J+J Flooring Kinetex, which provided the acoustical control essential for an elementary learning environment while delivering the durability and performance characteristics typically associated with LVT. Its low‑maintenance profile offered the district long‑term operational savings, reduced chemical use, and a healthier indoor environment. Kinetex became a bridge between comfort and performance—soft underfoot for students yet resilient enough for high‑traffic corridors and multipurpose spaces.

To further meet the vast majority of the flooring decisions, the design team selected Tarkett Optima iQ Modular Tile, a high‑performance, no‑wax resilient system chosen for its durability, sustainability, and long‑term value. Optima’s homogeneous construction enables surface scratches and everyday wear to be easily buffed out rather than accumulate, significantly extending the life of the material without the need for stripping, waxing, or harsh maintenance chemicals. This performance characteristic not only reduces operational downtime—an essential advantage in a continuously occupied school environment—but also aligns with the district’s sustainability goals by lowering VOC emissions and minimizing the environmental impact associated with traditional maintenance practices.

Its inherent slip resistance, cleanability, and resistance to staining made Optima an ideal solution for classrooms, corridors, and shared learning zones where safety, hygiene, and longevity are paramount. The modular tile provided the design team with flexibility in patterning and layout, ensuring that performance, aesthetics, and maintainability worked in harmony across the entire facility.

Although the floor patterns appear simple at first glance, their influence extends vertically. Colors and geometries climb the walls through coordinated paint bands and acoustic treatments, creating immersive learning zones that are vibrant, playful, and inclusive. The result is a holistic design that supports wayfinding, enhances student engagement, and celebrates the school’s identity through thoughtful material selection and meticulous installation craftsmanship.

Ultimately, the project showcases how a clear design vision, paired with masterful installation execution, can turn simple geometry into a powerful tool for identity, wayfinding, and student engagement.

Unique Installation Challenge Strategy

Rectilinear flooring patterns were selected for their clean, modern aesthetic and their practical advantages, but their success relied heavily on the installation team’s precision and craftsmanship. Straight cuts reduce tile waste and streamline installation—an essential factor in school construction schedules where accuracy and efficiency directly influence project outcomes. What appears straightforward on paper required a highly skilled team capable of maintaining exacting tolerances across long corridors, intersecting wings, and large, open learning spaces.

The installation team’s expertise became a defining element of the project’s unique design strategy. Their ability to execute crisp transitions, maintain uninterrupted sightlines, and align patterns flawlessly across multiple floor planes elevated the simplicity of the rectilinear design into a sophisticated visual system. Achieving this level of consistency demanded careful layout planning, continuous communication with the design team, and a deep understanding of how material behavior, substrate conditions, and construction sequencing would impact the final result. This collaborative, detail‑driven approach positioned the project strongly for the Unique Installation Challenge, demonstrating how technical excellence can amplify design intent.
