Universal Metro is proud to present a Design Spotlight on Bar Issi, a distinctive new Italian-inspired food and beverage destination in Palm Springs.

Located within The Thompson Palm Springs by Hyatt, Bar Issi is a breezy yet elevated coastal Italian restaurant that brings relaxed luxury and culinary sophistication to the desert. Rooted in the spirit of European seaside holidays and a sense of perpetual summer escapism, the concept celebrates seasonal California ingredients through the lens of classic Mediterranean traditions.

Visually, Bar Issi embraces a rich, expressive palette of Italian reds, blues, greens, and earthy neutrals. Its maximalist interior—designed by Tom Parker of Fettle Design—is poised to become a beloved fixture in Palm Springs’ vibrant dining scene. According to co-owner Marissa Hermer, the look and feel draw inspiration from Season 2 of HBO’s The White Lotus, set in a luxurious Sicilian resort, as well as California’s iconic Madonna Inn, known for its exuberant use of pattern, texture, and unapologetic overdesign.

When thoughtful design meets expert craftsmanship, the results are unforgettable. Universal Metro is honored to have played a key role in bringing Bar Issi to life. This glamorous new venue called for flooring solutions that could match its bold character and refined sensibility—and our team delivered. Collaborating closely with SMS Architects and Platinum Builders, the project exemplifies meticulous execution and a lasting partnership built on trust and collaboration.

The scope featured an extensive range of materials, including Daltile Bee Hive, Color Wheel Classic, Keystones, Penny Retro, Penny Round Remedy Elixir, and Hydro tiles, as well as hardwood flooring and Altro Stronghold 30, Altrofix, and Altromastic products. Custom exterior tile work, owner-supplied wood flooring, and wall tile installations beneath the bar further enhanced the space, collectively transforming it into a richly layered environment with a distinctly retro spirit. Every detail was executed to exceed industry standards.

Unique Installation Challenge Strategy

Unique Installation Challenge Overview and Solutions Provided by Universal Metro-

This project presented several distinctive installation challenges that required creative problem-solving and expert execution. The team was tasked with identifying and addressing complex issues, including:
• Complex Floor Failures: Certain areas of the existing flooring had elevation changes and we needed to align wood with the hexagon tile all while incorporating a true solid brass ring around the bar to set off the design elements yet insure no failures.
• Project Logistics & Site Conditions: The unusual circular layouts and coordination with other trades demanded careful scheduling and material integration strategies.
• Time & Budget Constraints: The project timeline was limited, and budget considerations required efficient resource planning without compromising quality all while performing an out of town job.
• Integration of Multiple Floorcovering Materials: Dal Tile Hexagon Bee Hive Medley Tile and Specialized hand scraped and wire brushed wood were used throughout the space, necessitating precise transitions and meticulous attention to detail while utilizing premium Bostik adhesives for long term success.
• Intricate Pattern Detailing: Custom designs and patterns needed exacting alignment and execution, pushing our team to apply advanced layout and cutting techniques.
• Alternative Use of Materials: Back of house was rescoped to Altro safety floor for safety and longevity over safe tile with abrasive finishes (hard to clean).
• By tackling these challenges, the team not only delivered a high-quality installation but also expanded our capabilities to handle complex projects and collaborate effectively with our valued Starnet vendor partners. This project exemplifies our ability to solve difficult installation scenarios while maintaining design integrity and operational efficiency.
