Project Strategy
Ceramic Wonderland. Fun, Bright, Make-Believe, Castle In the Air. Lagoon is Salt Lake City's premier amusement park. The Candy Parlour is one of Lagoon's most famous attractions, maybe even more so than the roller coasters! Colorful ceramic tile adorns the walls, cornice, contoured booths, columns and pony walls. No feature of the interior is linear: the interior features flow in constant and wondrous circles and curves. The entire space is reminiscent of a carousel. In fact, you can find animals of an old Lagoon carousel right in the store! Remember the joy of your childhood on Christmas or the 4th of July? This is it.
Unique Installation Challenge Strategy
Installing over 12,000 square feet of ceramic tile over numerous walls, cornices, columns and pony walls, almost all of which were continuously curved, is no easy matter. The tiles must be aligned and must smoothly follow the contour, and grout lines must be straight. Thirteen inch by thirteen inch mosaic glass tile panels were installed in parts of the space. These panels were particularly challenging because the concentration of color flowed from light at the top to dark at the bottom, and the pattern had to be matched both vertically and horizontally. Twenty percent of the scalloped tiles on the back wall required trimming by hand to fit in the specified pattern and layout. The result is stunning.
