Project Strategy

Meals on Wheels is a compassionate organization dedicated to providing care and comfort to the community. Each year, Meals on Wheels (MOW), delivers over 650,000 nutritious meals with friendly visits to older San Diegans, helping them stay in their homes, where they want to be. The San Diego Headquarters was designed to create a workspace that offers the same sense of support and ease to its employees by focusing on employee health and well-being.
To achieve this, the design embraced the principles of biophilic design, a human-centered approach that enhances our connection to nature and natural processes within built environments. Biophilia guided the design choices, helping foster a more restorative and comfortable atmosphere.
Key elements of this approach include ample views to the outdoors, strategically placed skylights that invite natural daylight, and the use of organic materials and forms. These choices were intentionally made to evoke calmness and connection with the natural world.
The Milliken carpet tile was chosen to complement the biophilic design concept while providing functional benefits. Its organic patterns harmonize with the nature-inspired elements, such as wood slats and leaf motifs, creating visual continuity throughout the space. Superior acoustic performance was also taken into consideration to help reduce noise in open work areas and volunteer hubs. Its aesthetic flexibility allowed us to incorporate patterns that align with the olive tree theme, while its modular nature supports ease of installation and future replacement if damaged.
The polished concrete flooring features subtle stamped patterns that mimic fallen leaves, reinforcing the biophilic concept and the olive tree inspiration. These organic motifs create continuity between the floor and other natural elements like wood slats and moss walls, grounding the entire design in nature.
This project has a unique integration of branding, biophilia, and sustainability blended into a cohesive experience. Elements like a moss wall, olive tree symbolism, and stamped leaf patterns create a space that nourishes the soul while supporting operational efficiency. The headquarters also includes a 10,000-square-foot industrial kitchen and a 13,000-square-foot volunteer hub, critical for scaling meal delivery to over a million annually.
Beyond the striking environmental graphics and biophilic elements, the flooring strategy stands out for blending beauty with practicality. Milliken carpet tile supports the nonprofit’s operational needs while reinforcing the design narrative of nourishment and connection.
The relocation and renovation were covered in local business news including an article by the San Diego Business Journal, highlighting the $18 million investment, expanded facilities, and community impact.
The team is proud to have created a headquarters that embodies Meals on Wheels’ mission of nourishment and connection. By blending biophilic design, sustainability, and branding, the space supports staff well-being and enables the organization to scale its impact, delivering millions of meals and fostering human connection for seniors across San Diego.
