Project Strategy
The new eight-story clinical tower expansion at Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford embodies a patient-centered design philosophy aimed at transforming pediatric healthcare from womb to adulthood, fostering a healing environment that eases the intimidation of hospital visits for children and families. Drawing on innovative technology, meaningful community input, and LEED Silver certification for sustainability, the $300 million project prioritizes collaborative spaces like multidisciplinary nurse stations and oversized fetal operating rooms to accommodate complex mother-child surgeries, while expanding capacity with 76 new beds, a 50,000-square-foot neonatal intensive care unit, enhanced behavioral health and cancer services, and a national fetal care center. Thoughtful interior and exterior aesthetics evoke calm and resilience, ensuring accessibility via a pedestrian skybridge to a new parking garage, all in service of elevating clinical excellence and well-being as a unified team.
The interior finishes of the Connecticut Children’s tower expansion are deliberately child-scaled, durable, and psychologically restorative, blending evidence-based healing design with playful resilience. Warm wood-look vinyl plank flooring, (with enchanting “stepping stones” throughout), and soft-toned wallcoverings in patient rooms reduce institutional starkness while meeting rigorous cleanability standards; large-scale nature murals and interactive digital art walls in corridors, (and elevators), distract and delight young patients, mitigating anxiety. Accent colors drawn from Connecticut’s seasonal palette—muted greens, sky blues, and golden ambers—thread through wayfinding graphics and furniture, creating intuitive navigation without overwhelming sensory input. Every finish selection balances clinical performance with the emotional goal of making a towering hospital feel like a protective, familiar haven for children and their families.
