Project Strategy

The destigmatization of mental illnesses has become a priority in recent years. For decades, the mismanagement of programs aimed at supporting families has caused an overflow of misconceptions and increased the negative connotations associated with them. To shift from the institutional care previously provided, California implemented residential facilities that focus on community-based care, marking a positive step towards a more socially conscious society.

The Riverside Franklin Adult Residential Facility is a great example of the impact community support makes on the quality of life that people with mental health problems lead. With the urgent need to help those with serious mental health issues, this project required the installation of high-quality flooring within a short timeframe. As Universal Metro took on this project, we partnered with General Contractor Swinerton Builders and Starnet Members Dal-Tile, Ardex and Flexco, who could guarantee prompt delivery of the material needed.

The original building underwent construction in 1970, adding a second floor which was also included in the scope of this project. The combined floors create over 40,000 square feet of the facility meant to serve 81 patients as they receive tailored support, since they are unable to live alone. The goal was to redesign the existing building in its entirety, so in collaboration with Dal-Tile we installed ceramic tiles from two collections and added marble thresholds to elevate the atmosphere and lighten the living areas. The color palette which consists of greens, blues, aquas, browns was strategically selected for its inspirational impact which will allow the residents to develop a sense of security and calmness during their stay.

To highlight the wood-framed roof, Dal-Tile’s Mythology wall tile was installed in the common areas, and tiles from the Keystones collection with a gloss finish were installed in the restrooms. To protect the resilient flooring from the coming traffic of residents and staff, our labor team installed Flexco’s 1776 Heavy Duty Radial II Stair Tread and Riser, following the pre-selected colorway.

Considering the value of residential facilities to their respective communities, it was an honor to participate in the renovation of the Riverside Franklin ARF. With tremendous effort, our team completed the installation without delay, creating a dignified space for those most vulnerable.
