Project Strategy
This project was initiated due to a failure of previous floor coverings at the JL Mudd Elementary School in the Fort Zumwalt School District. The glue was emulsifying due to moisture in the slab. We began this process by consulting with Mike Wagner of Ardex to determine the best solution for this scenario. Mike referred us to Nathan Twyman of Twyman Flooring to open the floor up to begin the prep in two separate stages. The first stage was 35,000 sf then the second stage was 15,000 sf, all of which had to be completed within a six-week time frame. The first week we demoed the 35,000 sf of VCT, allowing Twyman Flooring the time to grind the surface of the floor and install the VB 100. Prior to installation of the new floor covering, we began the final prep of the floor using Ardex MRF and Feather Finish. Then we were able to install the Armstrong Standard Excelon 12"x12" VCT with the Henrys Plum Pro 647 followed by the 4" Roppe rubber cove base. This allowed the school to move back into the building to allow us access to begin stage two of the project, which was the section of 15,000 sf. This project had its fair share of challenges, but with the help of Nathan Twyman of Twyman Flooring, Mike Wagner of Ardex, Lisa Koester with Fort Zumwalt School District and Richardet Floor Covering group consisting of Andy Haertling who was the project manager and Dwyane Chapman as the project superintendent, we were able to successfully complete the project to the satisfaction of the client with school district commenting on how this was the best looking floor in the District.
