Project Strategy
St. Josephs Elementary School has been a long time client of Beatty Floors Ltd and for the past several years we have provided repair and remediation services until the repairs no longer were feasible. The school administrator and Aleshia Biason (Beatty Floors Ltd - Account Manager) began the dialog and budget scenarios for a refresh throughout the school. The administrator was also looking for something that gave the students an identity and something to identify their pride in the school and Aleshia suggested 2 locations where a school crest logo could be placed. Aleshia's experience with product performance with Tarkett products in K-7 schools was proposed and with the assistance of Tarkett's "Designer on Demand" service, a simple yet effective design was approved by the school stakeholders. A bright field color and a darker frame-like border would provide the students with structure and delineation of space. A loud but relevant voice was that of the custodian who wanted a product that could easily be maintained throughout the year and IQ Optima fit the bill perfectly.
Unique Installation Challenge Strategy
The school was about to be closed and our crew had only 12 days to remove the existing VCT, grind the old adhesive, patch and repair the existing concrete substrate and install 956 SY of Tarkett IQ Optima 202 Grey Opal in the main field and frame it with a 12" border of Tarkett IQ Optima 204 Cobalt Smoke. The mechanics worked 10 hour days and took the project on with the utmost care and attention, ensuring that any previous installation challenges were not repeated. the first 2 days were demo days and we removed all the existing VCT by using a ride-on panther. We quickly discovered multiple areas with surface concrete spalling and where gypsum patching compound began to deteriorate. With the approved budget in place, we couldn't ask the school for additional funds for further remediation so we donate the required materials and labor to complete the project without causing any further unnecessary hardship. Using Ardex Ardifix, we filled over 500 linear feet of cracks and used 170 bags of ARDEX MRF (Moisture Resistant Feather Finish) to patch and smoothen the rough concrete surface. The flooring install was completed using Johnsonite 4" Cove base 4"and MAPEI 575 base adhesive. the school was completed in time and the students were welcomed to a clean and bright learning environment.
