Project Strategy
The Original Van Asselt School, a historic gem located in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood, has been beautifully revitalized to blend its 1909 Tudor-style charm with modern functionality. Designed by architect Edgar Blair, the building initially served as an elementary school with four classrooms centered around a grand stairwell. Over the decades, it saw expansions including basement classrooms in the 1940s and an elevator addition in 2002, culminating in its designation as a City of Seattle Landmark in 2019.
Seattle Public Schools (SPS) undertook a significant revitalization of the Van Asselt School in 2019, preserving its architectural heritage while modernizing it to meet today’s educational standards. The restoration included essential upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and safety systems and a careful restoration of the building’s original 1909 features.
The project also added a new two-story classroom wing and gymnasium, accommodating 650 additional students. This addition was thoughtfully designed to complement the historic architecture, ensuring the 1909 building remains the centerpiece of the campus.
Integral to the project’s success were the high-quality materials that bridged historical charm with contemporary resilience. Tarkett linoleum was installed throughout the facility, offering a sustainable, durable flooring solution that harmonized with the design aesthetic. Additionally, Daltile ceramic tile was used to enhance key spaces, adding both functionality and timeless beauty.
This remarkable project showcases the perfect union of historic preservation and modern design, ensuring the legacy of Van Asselt School endures for future generations while meeting the needs of today’s learners.
