Project Strategy
The Fairview Middle School Replacement for Central Kitsap School District embodies the natural beauty of its surroundings through thoughtful design and material use. This project includes new classrooms, a kitchen, distributed administration, community health, and commons spaces while preserving and refurbishing the existing gym, band, and choir facilities. Inspired by regional forest service watch towers, the design incorporates a masonry base to provide a sense of safety and refuge. Large windows and open layouts emphasize natural views and create an inviting, light-filled environment.
Inside, the design reflects the forest’s understory, trunk, and canopy, creating warm and inspiring spaces for students and staff. Materials were selected to complement the natural setting, with cross-laminated timber (CLT) playing a key role in creating a connection to the outdoors. Whether in the courtyard or walking through the hallways, occupants feel immersed in the beauty of the surrounding forest.
A standout feature of this project is the innovative flooring solution. Tarkett sheet linoleum was custom-cut into 48"x48" tiles, which are carefully scattered throughout the three main hallways. This unique approach adds visual interest and strengthens the connection between the interior design and the forest-inspired theme.
With its commitment to sustainable materials and thoughtful design, Fairview Middle School creates a harmonious blend of functionality and natural beauty, providing a welcoming and inspiring environment for the school community. This project stands as a testament to the potential of design to honor and celebrate its environment.
