Project Strategy
Long Beach High School on the south shore of Long Island boasts a unique waterfront location, offering students a picturesque view of the bay from its library. Recently, the library underwent a comprehensive renovation to provide an enhanced environment for students. Before this transformation, the library suffered from severe outdatedness, marked by sagging drop ceilings, old-fashioned fixtures, outdated flooring, and furniture. The school district decided to revitalize the library and contacted their architect, John Grillo of JAG Architects, to design and plan the project.
RENU Contracting Restoration was awarded the project as the General Contractor and accepted the tight six-week timeline and sub-contracted Milburn Flooring to install quality flooring because they perform well under tight timelines, working alongside other trades, and are well versed in working with Architects to specify readily available products that suit the visual expectations of customers.
Milburn Flooring worked in two phases on this project. In the first phase, they removed all existing VCT, broadloom carpet, and stair treads and immediately began self-leveling the floor at ¼” throughout using Uzin Self Level NC150 and Primer PE260. The self-leveling at the beginning of the project allowed RENU’s carpenters to build all new walls and built-in casework on a smooth, level floor. The second phase for Milburn came in the final seven days of the project when it came time for the installation of the finished flooring, at the same time as painting and furniture deliveries. The installation included a full skim coat of the self-leveling to rectify any imperfections caused by the other trades in the previous weeks, along with the installation of 312 yards of Mohawk Necessary Carpet Tile Color Frizzle in the library’s upper level and 2,350 feet of Mohawk Living Local Premium Wood LVT Color Fawn in the library’s lower level along with Johnsonite Raised Rubber Treads on the stairwells and Johnsonite Cove Base throughout the library. The final area completed was the entrance lobby and restrooms, which received Dal-Tile subway tile on the walls and Dal-Tile wood visual plank for the flooring.
To the delight of the Long Beach City School District and through the teamwork and effort of Milburn Flooring, RENU Contracting Restoration, along with the Design Team at JAG Architects, this project was finished within the tight six-week time frame. Despite the tight timelines, Milburn was able to lean on their Starnet Partners at UZIN, Mohawk, Johnsonite, and Dal-Tile to meet all product deadlines and make this a 100% Starnet Project.
