Project Strategy
The UCM Elliott Student Union historic building just celebrated its 60th anniversary. This building is unique, with many arrays of resources for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. It offers a great and welcoming venue for conferences, camps, meetings, and even banquets. The architects Hollis and Miller pulled the colors of the school into this design using the Mohawk Metal collection. The large 18x36 tile format helped bring these colors to life. The diagonal installation utilizing three colors in a designed pattern creates a wonderful visual. It doesn't stop there, as you enter the building you walk over vibrant logo mats made by Matter Surfaces. These are inserted with a Daltile Volume 1.0 border nestled around the perimeter. This project came together colorfully pleasant.
Unique Installation Challenge Strategy
This historic building is not without its' challenges, like most older buildings the substrates have typically been the canvas for multiple artists to express themselves. Leaving behind the scars of a rough and at times unlevel floor. Thanks to Ardex Feather finish skim coat these scars can be healed. As for the deep scars and unknown previous layers, Ardex K22 saves the day. The canvas can be brought back to life by providing a reinforced topcoat that is up to the challenge and ready for the new brush of expression.
Even though this was a summer project, there was still foot traffic. Installing areas in sections at times requires more safety precautions to go into play for those around the work area.
