Project Strategy
Ten years ago, Upstate Warrior Solution began to envision and plan for a new veteran-centric hub in the Upstate. Today, the Rupert Huse Veteran Center serves as a beacon of hope for current and former military members. The first of its kind in the state, the 40,000-square-foot veteran center offers life-changing resources to local veterans and their families. Creating a one-stop shop that would cater to veterans’ unique needs was a key priority when planning the new space. “Care for our local warriors and their families is challenging, as the existing base of services is often disconnected and difficult for our veterans to navigate,” said Charlie Hall, UWS President.
The Rupert Huse Veteran Center marks a significant milestone in strengthening the Upstate veteran community. Key partners from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors are now co-located at the center in a strategic effort to improve collaboration and streamline veteran care, thus increasing UWS’s ability to address the complex issues facing our community’s veterans. From job placement services and career counseling to mental health support and access to medical resources, the facility ensures that no veteran is left behind.
This comprehensive approach not only improves the lives of individual veterans but also has a positive ripple effect on their families and the wider community, as veterans can more effectively reintegrate into society and contribute their skills and expertise to local businesses. The RHVC is a place where the courageous individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving their country can find solace, encouragement, and a renewed sense of purpose as they embark on their civilian journey.
The design of the Rupert Van Huse Veteran Center is focused on promoting a comfortable place where veterans can come to recharge and prepare themselves for civilian life. The interior spaces feature large windows that provide natural daylight which is reflected against opaque, neutral-colored, and smooth interior finishes. Nourishment is promoted by the inclusion of a communal break area where tenants can store their own food and visitors can stay hydrated and enjoy refreshments. The fitness center provides equipment and classes that encourage an active lifestyle. The RVHC promotes social capital and combats loneliness in veterans by using seating to create positive informal social interaction throughout the center. Break-out areas, nooks, and lounge areas throughout the space accommodate a range of user preferences and encourage conversation. Accessibility measures allow veterans with disabilities and those with service animals to find safe spaces for recreation and connection.
The design inspiration is centered on the theme of honor. Intricate details including uniform colors and accents are woven throughout the space, including a feature wall of stylized military service ribbons. Soldier portraits, an oversized American flag, and a star-studded donor wall are just a few of the unique elements that make up the space. The materials and finishes are a mix of industrial and soft textures to convey a military style that’s approachable and feels comforting.
