Project Strategy
The design of the new resilient flooring at Welch Elementary School provides both a child-friendly aesthetic and new functional benefits using two distinct strategies.
Large areas of neutral colors are used throughout the main public spaces to reinforce the interior volumes and wall areas. The colors and patterns of all finishes, including the flooring, in these areas serve as a background “canvas” for student work to be displayed. A similar pattern continues into the cafeteria where large neutral fields correspond to the Stage and exits to the room. This allows for easy setup of tables and chairs into straight rows and clear aisles.
A contrasting strategy was used in the classroom areas where a vibrant wave pattern conveys a sense of playfulness in the existing masonry corridors. A field of color partially continues into each classroom to provide a sense of identity to the students based on grade level. Each corridor uses a unique color linoleum to provide for clear wayfinding throughout the building.
