Bellevue Library is the largest library in the King County Library System with an 80,000 square foot facility, making the remodel of the first and third floors a large undertaking. On top of new technology, furniture and flooring, the remodel was implemented to improve the facility’s aesthetic and attract a younger demographic.
The children’s area was moved from the first floor to the third floor, where Great Floors installed Milliken carpet tiles in a custom pattern of bright blues, black and white. To create an imaginative space for young library patrons the room is complete with whimsical furniture and bright reading nooks. The most exciting aspect of the first floor is the “ideaX Maker Space”, a multipurpose room for the local community that includes a 3D printer, music/video editing software, sewing stations and more. Bright shades of pink, blue and yellow carpet divide up the space. According to architect Ruth Baleiko (Partner at the Miller Hull Partnership) “for the carpeting, we created three unique colorways for each of the acoustically separated activity spaces in a custom “pixelized” print. Milliken was super helpful at working through various color iterations for our team and client: matching to already selected laminates and paints, shifting various pixels and working to get the desired mix of tones.”
The first and third floor remodel was completed early 2018 and has been an amazing resource for the local community. The design goal of creating a modern, updated aesthetic was accomplished through thoughtful details and bold color selections. We are looking forward to the second-floor remodel in the (hopefully near) future to complete the transformation!
