The Chocolate Factory draws inspiration from the tales of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and is the latest installment on our client’s storybook-themed campus. The client, a software development company, sought to create a whimsical and energetic environment using cost effective materials to promote creativity in their hundreds of software engineers and to inspire their visitors while guiding them through the site.
The focal point of the building is the Chocotastic Wonkanator, a decorative chocolate making contraption producing chocolate bars that travel out of the building on a conveyor belt inspired carpet. Just as in a factory, movement of people and parcels thru the building must be efficient and intuitive. To achieve the feel of a factory, the design and flooring teams placed portions of wood looking vinyl and stained concrete, along with ornamental metal grate stair risers and solid wood floors in strategic areas. The skillfully placed finishes guide the pedestrians to associate these real factory textures with the surrounding floor coverings, cleverly designed to mimic their texture. To achieve an efficient and intuitive movement, we used directional stripping, guiding arrows and bordered circulation paths to indicate the most direct routes through the building. In the ceiling of the corridor, tubes appear to transport chocolate and candy from one area to another and compliment the confectionary tinted walls. When these candy colored designs and artful displays are seamed together, the walking paths and intersections unite to complete the illusion.
The magic of the design is finalized with the Wonkavator, a regular elevator tricked out to look like a glass elevator. Elevator panels, digital wall cover and flooring match seamlessly to give you the feeling of floating above the gorgeous Wisconsin landscape. As you make your way through this building, you will find brilliant software engineers working in a creative and energetic space.
