Project Strategy
Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Wayne County Michigan served 34.4 million passengers in 2016.
That is a nonstop river of passengers every day, 24/7.
It takes a strong carpet fiber to stand up to this cavalcade of footfalls.
In 2002 Smith Group specified a carpet tile with a 100% Antron face fiber.
This carpet tile was installed in the massive brand new McNamara Terminal.
The McNamara Terminal houses 3 concourses and 103 gates.
The Lion’s share of flights and passengers flow through the McNamara Terminal.
Then in 2008 The North Terminal opened. North Terminal has one concourse and 26 gates.
The North Terminal carries less than 25% of the 34.4 million passengers annually.
The Airport Authority looked to us for answers to a developing predicament.
Despite a much smaller percentage of passenger volume, the carpet tile in the North Terminal appeared dirty and worn.
The McNamara Terminal carpet was 6 years older and still looked great. Why?
The North Terminal carpet was so bad it had to be replaced.
The 6 year older McNamara carpet still looked fantastic.
Every Mill Rep in town was trying to win the North Terminal replacement project.
The owner looked to us to provide solutions.
We researched and discovered Antron was specified in the McNamara Terminal, while
Solution Q was used in the North Terminal.
We explained the inherent differences between type 6 and type 6,6 nylon.
Performance and cleanability are greatly enhanced by the 6,6 formulation.
Carpet made with 100% Antron fiber has 3x better fade resistance, 10x better stain resistance and 2x better texture retention.
Combine these feature with 65% better stain resistance and the correct choice is obvious.
That is the Antron difference.
We convinced the Airport Authority to run some test areas to demonstrate.
We installed carpet tile from 5 different manufacturers in wall to wall bands.
The bands were installed in the same busy corridor and received identical traffic and maintenance. This test remained in place for over 6 months.
Antron proved its worth and was the hands down performance winner!
Starnet Preferred Vendor Mannington was chosen to be the carpet tile.
Over 10,000 sq yards of Mannington Style Deep Thoughts II color Imagine 34151 was ordered. The mid range, medium contrast pattern worked beautifully with the existing architectural elements. The final phase was recently completed and the owner is very pleased.
