Project Strategy
Coleman Partners Architects designed the West Feliciana Elementary School to embody “21st-century” teaching philosophies which support a number of pedagogies meeting the individual needs of each student. A big part of this is the school’s signature “Learning Corridor” – the central corridor with pockets of informal seating, computer stations, study nooks, and colorful infographics along its entire length. These learning spaces are an informal alternative to the traditional classroom, affording flexibility. They also encourage collaboration as they are open and allow various furniture arrangements. At the heart of the Learning Corridor is a spacious, sunlight-filled student entry lobby with an open media center, tiered seating, and a soaring bridge.
Partnering with Mannington, Armstrong, and Key Resin Company allowed the finishes, including flooring, to balance a sense of continuity along the Learning Corridor, as well as individuality at the various spaces of learning. An exceptionally dynamic space is where the terrazzo of the entry lobby, the carpet of the open media center, and the wood of social stairs weave together with the VCT of the corridor to help create a fun “kaleidoscope” of colors and textures.
The design has been a success, and its leaders reporting that faculty and students seem more energized and engaged than ever in this exciting new learning environment.
