Project Strategy
The Hubbard Center was designed to enhance the healing environment at the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. The project consists of a new nine story tower with 427,000sf along with a 55,000sf renovation to the exiting hospital. The project had an aggressive schedule, which required significant manpower all while working through COVID with unforeseen delays. We encountered logistical challenges, like delivery and staging, due to the small plot of land this large project was built on. There was extensive floor prep in selected areas as well as moisture mitigation. Working with the architect we were able to get an Ardex product approved for the mitigation that was faster and more economical, while still meeting the architects' requirements. There were several meetings with HDR to discuss the sheet vinyl layout. This in turn drove the best end result for installation and aesthetic appearance - all making for a happy client! Collaboration is the key to success and allows all parties to be engaged in the project.
Unique Installation Challenge Strategy
This project was beautifully designed by HDR with many intricate details in the flooring, specifically the sheet vinyl. We utilized a computer numerical control (CNC) machine to fabricate templates in order to make the flooring design installation 100% accurate to scale. We also worked with Henry adhesives to find a solution that met the required spec but had a longer working, but quicker cure time. The specification required integral cove sheet vinyl corners to have butterfly detail, which is not a common practice in our geography. As a result, we had our installers level 3 trained by Armstrong to prepare for this detail and the overall project. The patterns turned out beautifully and met the design intent!
