Project Strategy
In 2008, George Hershman had a vision: bring better energy solutions to the world using the power of the sun. By 2020 that dream had evolved into SOLV Energy where more than 800 people are employed to install utility-scale Solar Energy projects with an agile, data-driven approach. That year they also had the opportunity to build a headquarters that could embody the warm, cooperative culture they had nurtured. The “heart” of the office is the Operations Control Center which is staffed 24/7 and monitors the operations of the installations located all over the country. The designer, ID Studios, channeled SOLV’s goal of a healthy workplace by providing natural light through sun-tracking skylights, fresh air with an indoor/outdoor break area, and clean water through their “Ditch the Plastic” campaign powered by easily accessible water filters.
Having a work environment where each person can work comfortably was equally as important, so providing a variety of environments including a heads-down workspace and a selection of collaboration areas was crucial. Using nature as their guide, the design team was inspired by facets and angles. Not only is this apparent when viewing the plan, but also in the space itself in the architectural details and in the flooring, finishes, and lighting. The fractal patterning found in Mohawk’s “Relaxing Floors” Collection provided the perfect solution because of its culmination of art, science, and human-centered design. The patterns emulate a connection to nature, as well as provide stress-reducing qualities to those who experience it. In the end, the design and construction team successfully created an inspiring space which accomplished bringing the feel of nature into the contract built environment.
