Project Strategy
Komatsu America is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of earth-moving equipment, including construction, mining, and more. The design of their new Chicago headquarters is intended to celebrate this industry while adding a level of sophistication that sets them apart. The success of the design is largely attributed to the simplicity of materials used throughout the space. The architectural team at Partners by Design highlights three main materials - concrete, wood and steel – which creates a cohesive experience across four (4) full floors of workspace. The materials carry you through the space and are made more impactful by the textures applied to them and the planes in which they are installed. J+J Flooring’s Boucle carpet tile specifically speaks to Komatsu’s earth-moving roots and celebrates a variety of neutral textures. Textures are pulled together by a J+J Flooring wood-look LVT corridor. The LVT corridor is a continuous loop around the building helping to connect all users through their space. Clever details, such as the tactile warning created out of LVT, tie all the earth moving materials together.
