The brand new 9 story world class Nationwide Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Pavilion located in downtown Columbus Ohio is America’s largest behavioral health treatment and research center just for children and adolescents. By building the facility directly on its main campus, Nationwide Children aims to reduce the stigma associated with behavioral health issues. The building is a bright, airy space filled with natural light that contributes to a healing environment. The facility features two large outdoor courtyards, a half court indoor gymnasium and outdoor screened porches on every inpatient level. Challenges for the design team was making sure that the facility led with patient safety, while keeping with the Hospital’s uplifting curative environment which has become a branding force in the Hospital’s aggressive 10-year growth plan. Hospital Designer, Alisa Pinciotti, wanted to create a flowing stream design mimicking nature while using bright color for accenting and wayfinding. The expressions of these design ideas can be seen in very creative sheet vinyl patterns throughout patient areas with scenes of nature as it ties in customized painting and wall panels.
Today’s challenges with skilled labor shortages and the fast track schedule on this project led to many obstacles especially with the high design corridors and public areas. With 15,000 square yards of sheet vinyl, 24,000 square feet of VCT, 3500 square yards of carpet tile, 3,200 square feet of gymnasium rubber and 4 miles of Tarkett Millwork contoured base glued and installed with tamper proof screws, we had multiple crews on multiple floors for months. We accomplished this without letting down any other of our clients by recruiting and hiring new installers to man other projects while assigning our “best of the best” to attack this imposing venture.
The results; an ecstatic end-user, a well satisfied general contractor and Floor Systems & Design being set apart as a leading partner in the floor covering industry while being part of a team that had the privilege to have a part in building this state of the art healthcare gem!
