The Cannon is a 120,000 square foot workspace and entrepreneurial dream located in The Founders District of Houston, Texas. The Cannon is the first phase of many buildings on this 36-Acre campus that will unite a multitude of market sectors; Commercial office space, modern multifamily housing, retail, food and beverage all within a walkable community environment. The Cannon, designed by Abel Design Group out of Austin, TX, was transformed from an existing 1950’s manufacturing building that is now a hub for innovators, entrepreneurs, aspiring start-ups, investors, service providers and business advisers. The space houses various types of workspaces from private offices, open bench seating, meeting rooms, lounge areas, a breakroom that opens to an outdoor courtyard, wellness/yoga room, library, theater, training room, showers, and central staged stadium seating for Shark Tank type presentations. Quality Service was engaged in the early stages of design due to the complexity of the existing warehouse and the challenges Abel Design Group faced when choosing the appropriate flooring specifications. The existing slab, was exposed to the natural elements, and through time, displayed severe degradation of the slab causing the aggregate to be visible and several areas that were not level. Unbeknownst to us, there was a topper installed by a third party preventing any moisture tests to be performed. We worked closely with the general contractor and presented an upgrade floor prep and glue solution to further negate the need for moisture testing. Quality Service installed carpet specifications that perform the best against relative humidity in existing slabs, and were backed by warranties. The result was a highly successful design that captured both the client and designer’s vision, while providing high performance solutions to the space.
