Project: Van Andel Arena – Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit Red Wings Minor affiliate)
Project Overview: Hospitality/Public Space Category
If you’ve ever visited Grand Rapids, Michigan, you know the importance of the names DeVos and Van Andel. Innovation and design focused commercial manufacturers like Steelcase and Haworth have called Grand Rapids home for generations and in this mecca of design, the Van Andel and DeVos family hired Century for a renovation on Van Andel Arena. They chose to go beyond normal design considerations for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the minor league affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. The likes of Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman put his own eyes on this project, and we couldn’t be prouder to share this experience.
Centered in the heart of Grand Rapids, the Van Andel Arena is one of the busiest venues in town. Built in 1996, it has been the home for the Grand Rapids Griffins since its opening. This multi-purpose sports facility hosts hundreds of concerts, sporting events, and various entertainment for all ages. After 23 years of heavy use, it was time for a facelift for the locker rooms, dressing rooms, VIP lounge, weight room, public space and a gift shop. A total demo and revamp were in order and Century was honored to be selected for the challenge of redoing the previously mentioned areas, featuring several different floor types.
Truth is the arena virtually never shuts down and this project was held to very tight schedules and deadlines. Balancing the Griffins’ summer training camp and fall practice schedule along with other shows and concerts, we had to make sure the locker rooms were ready to go for opening night! No excuses, just a finished remodel on time and on budget.
Of course, the revenue seeking administrative team for the Arena wanted to keep holding events that threw off the scheduling. We soon found out all work had to be done without excuse, however, no one could work while the celebrities were practicing or present. You can see how our window for the install, not just flooring but all trades, had zero margin for error.
We had to make sure all products were staged properly and ready to go once our time for install was up! In the end, with all the challenges and changes to scheduling and a 23-year-old building remodel, the result is stunning as you can see. All the products and finishes flowed well together and serve a purpose in which they were intended for. From the ceramic in the showers and rest rooms, to the LVT in the VIP lounge, to the carpet and rubber in the locker rooms, each product fulfills a unique need.
A very fun and challenging project that Century is proud to put their name on, and we are proud to represent Starnet in this category!
