Canyon View High School is an innovative high school located in the heart of the Arizona desert designed by DLR Group Phoenix. The “Learning Stair” is a feature of campus that capitalizes on the great weather and creates an enhanced outdoor learning environment. Located at the epicenter of the 270,000 SF campus, it delineates the collision of activity spaces, circulation paths, and cool microclimates of the campus. This space supports over 137 activities identified as district priorities in tandem with adjacent community space. The stair is monolithic in color and extremely vibrant, in order to define it as a central location and feature throughout the vast indoor/outdoor campus experience. Material selection, needed to have a natural slip resistance for stair usage and flooring, as well as transition to a wall, and countertop material. Pattern and design of material were defined in an effort to create this central mass that could encapsulate the attached outdoor café, as well as the stair.
