The Southcenter Library is located in a high-traffic mall in Tukwila, Washington making it a frequent stop for shoppers and library patrons alike. In order to remodel an existing 2,550 square foot library without disrupting the public’s access to library resources, the library remained open during the remodel. This created a unique challenge for the design team and our installers who were already faced with a limited budget, quick turnaround, and a 2,300 square foot addition.
Milliken carpet tile, the King County Library standard, was selected because of its durability and exceptional reputation in commercial spaces. In order to create an eye-catching and inviting space, the design team boldly contrasted the blue painted façade with orange and grey custom carpet tiles. The orange Milliken carpet tiles create an inviting, warm space while also delineating collaborative spaces and reading nooks. The grey carpet tiles were skillfully inlayed to create clean lines throughout the intricate Milliken pattern- perfectly executing the designers’ vision to simply break up the open space using the same pattern. In addition to the transitions, unique furniture was selected to accent the carpet installation. Building Work Architect Kate Weiland admitted this was the first project where she has made the floor covering the focal point over furniture. Fingers crossed she continues to select bold Starnet floor covering on future projects!
