The Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW) HUB for Collaborative Medicine is a literal and symbolic bridge connecting clinical, research, and academic missions, compelling individuals to interact by increasing connectivity in formal and informal ways. The HUB is where all of the collaborative elements are organized. Open and colorful stairs function as vertical corridors that connect 8 floors and are designed to orchestrate interactions between individuals travelling through intersections connecting existing building areas. Formal zones reserved for meetings, along with informal meeting and lounge spaces, are centralized around these floor to floor openings. Meeting spaces and private offices are partially enclosed with glass to provide natural light and to foster transparency for collaboration and innovation.
The flooring materials provide continuity and visual distinction. The finish palette of patterned and textured neutral grays and blues, along with other design elements, create a stage for MCW’s branding. Milliken carpet tile and LVT in textured organic and geometric patterns provide smooth transitions following the curve of the building, and set a lighter, neutral background for the office components. The interior architecture is clean and crisp, with the flooring adding warmth, texture and sophistication. The flooring design knits all of the spaces together into a professional, yet comfortable, workplace.
