Project Strategy
When offshore drilling giant Ensco hired Ken R. Harry Associates to design the executive floor of its U.S. headquarters in Houston, the vision came straight from Ensco’s chairman: Create an open, transparent, free-flowing workplace where ideas could be easily shared and collaboration celebrated.
The result includes curved and rounded spaces, glass walls, and custom millwork. A dramatic, elliptical-shaped conference room was created by mirroring the ceiling’s details into the flooring choices of beautiful limestone and carpet products from Atlas. Two Starbuck’s-like coffee bars anchor opposing corners, complete with unique radius elements complemented by custom glazing, furniture selections and Daltile porcelain flooring.
The flooring finishes (also by Johnsonite and Mannington) provide visual continuity throughout the diverse spaces of the 22,000 square feet, but the most challenging aspect was to ensure the stone, tile and carpet choices not only complemented but also enhanced the other features. For example, the curved carpet border creates the illusion of glass walls floating atop the carpet border, making the space feel more inviting. That the flooring choices contain what could be considered a wave is homage to the company’s offshore business.
The results are simply stunning, and Ensco agreed, hiring KRHA for seven more floors!
