Project Strategy
In Concord, North Carolina, this beautiful historic building, Flywheel, offers 20,000 square feet of private offices, coworking, meeting, and event spaces, providing the perfect location for small businesses, startups, freelancers, and remote workers to call home.
Our goal was to create an inspiring space while maintaining the architectural integrity of the building. When we began this project, many of the specified products were unavailable. Our team worked diligently to find suitable substitutions that concurred with the vision of the original design.
The building had some existing marble that the architect wished to preserve, but the unleveled substrate made the transitions difficult. We had to work closely with the team to accommodate the changes in the floor. Grinding, self-leveling, and Schluter helped us reach the desired aesthetic.
The bar area had custom order tile from Dal-tile. We created the design, sent the drawing to Dal-tile, and received a digital image of the finished product for the architect to approve. Again, this tile met up with a thicker tile, and once again, we had to accommodate for the difference.
Unique Installation Challenge Strategy
This historic building, once a bank, boasts original marble and columns that were incorporated into the design. This presented several challenges to our team. The original marble, flanked by columns, had a specified tile border that was unavailable. We found a similar product; but had to cut both sides of the herringbone tile pattern so it would sit seamlessly against the border. The plank border tile had to be cut to accommodate the columns, which required 46 cuts per column. Carpet was specified on one side of the border and the other was the hexagon tile. Overall we had 5 different flooring selections in this main room with each product having a different thickness. Our team proved to up for the challenge of this very unique installation.
