Project Strategy
When Bonitz announced it would be bringing their flagship headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina, the team was excited for the opportunity to design and build their own space. This upfit called for a total renovation of their existing 60,000 square foot office. Originating as a contracting company in 1954, Bonitz has evolved into a leading specialty trade contractor providing solutions in flooring, ceilings, wall systems, specialty products, and maintenance throughout their 15 locations. At the heart of this project was a chance to transform their outdated, segmented space into a cohesive and collaborative atmosphere for associates. Additionally, the overall goal was to create a working showroom where associates could bring clients to see Bonitz’s vast offering of products and installation capabilities.
The renovation team was tasked to embody the company’s culture while incorporating their valued vendor partners to create a productive and fun working environment. Milliken’s Edge Lit cushion back carpet tile, was selected to be the foundation of the design due to its large-scale geometric pattern and bright colors which capture Bonitz’s updated branding. In addition to the aesthetic, the carpet provides acoustic and ergonomic benefits. Combining the Milliken cushion back technology with a suspended, perforated, lightweight beam system proved to help elevate acoustics in the open office area. The beams, a focal point in the space, are suspended at various heights complementing the rigid angles in the carpet. The design team was inspired by the vibrant Edge Lit pattern and incorporated its colors into the other flooring products, creating a flow of seamless transitions throughout the space. Notably, the design of the breakroom, crafted to be the social hub of the facility for associates and visitors, aimed to provide an industrial aesthetic. Ardex’s polishable K523 topping was specified for its aggregate exposed surface and durability. The flooring became more impactful when combined with fabric panels, branded wall graphics, and unique ceiling products of various textures and colors.
