Project Strategy
The Jones Hill House Football Training Facility at the University of Maryland College Park transformed the iconic Cole Field House Basketball Facility into a state-of-the-art football performance center. The project renovated the existing basketball courts into an indoor football practice field and built an addition alongside the building to provide a new home to the football operations. The driving factors for the flooring selections were performance and brand identity. The performance criteria that the flooring selections were made included the ability for athletic performance, durability, and ease of maintenance. Color selections were made to match and enhance the “Maryland Red” color that is used throughout the building. Carpet tiles were selected that all have a form of red stripping in them to compliment the environmental graphics and finishes that were installed throughout the building. The sheet vinyl selections were based on athletic performance since they were being installed in the sports rehab area of the building. All of the flooring selections needed to withstand abuse from the athlete’s footwear.
The most important factor in the flooring selection was how would the flooring enhance the branding identity of the Maryland Football Team. The building needed to create a WOW factor that would support the recruiting process and get the top football recruits from across the country to want to come and train at the Jones-Hill House. The products and colors that were selected were all made to enhance the overall experience and design to accomplish this goal.
