Project Strategy
Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital opened an expanded neonatal intensive care unit in 2018. When families arrive at the new NICU, photos and stories of children on the Wall of Hope are meant to give them inspiration through what can be a very difficult time. The carpet provides a nice accent in this area, reflecting the symmetry of the fish swimming about at the end of the hall. The top two floors of the children’s hospital have been transformed into a state of the art NICU with 68 patient rooms. The resilient flooring in beautiful woods was specifically chosen to provide a more home-like environment. “A fundamental aspect of this new unit is it makes it far easier for parents to be with their child during the day or overnight”, said Dr. Mark Mercurio, the hospital’s Director of Newborn Services. Eight of the rooms are designed for couplet care, allowing the mom to stay in the same room as her newborn child. “We are going to be one of the first hospitals in the country to deliver this kind of care and we think it is really important for that early bonding experience,” Chairman of Pediatrics, Dr. Clifford Bogue, said.
Performance/Durability:
Describe how the space was designed to meet high performance/durability criteria (e.g. long-term installation, heavy foot traffic, challenging ambient/environmental conditions) and why carpets of Antron® was selected.
Yale New Haven Children's Hospital is one of the most visited hospitals in the country. With this high amount of traffic, the flooring finishes must be durable enough to sustain these visitors. The Atlas carpet chosen with Antron fiber will help toward this goal. The fiber in this carpet will not crush as readily as others, will clean up easier with proper carpet maintenance, and will provide many, many years of softness underfoot with a soothing design to calm families during stressful times.
Care & Maintenance Program/Cleanability
Describe why carpets of Antron® was selected if the client had key specification requirements that included a maintenance program to help reduce carpet soiling, reduce maintenance, ease of cleaning and/or lower life cycle costs.
Although originally the carpet was not chosen for the specific reason to help reduce maintenance, when the architect was selecting Atlas carpets, we were able to provide this additional information to the end user. YNHH was buoyed up by the fact that ease of cleaning and lower life cycle costs through the installation of the Atlas carpet in their "Wall of Hope" area was achieved using Antron fiber.
Occupant Wellbeing:
If the client had key specification requirements to support occupant wellbeing (i.e. WELL), efficiency and/or environmental factors (i.e. indoor-air quality, acoustics), describe why carpets of Antron® was selected.
We often discuss with this client directly the benefits of flooring materials in their buildings to help achieve their WELL goals.
